What is the GEMINI Project?

The GEMINI (Grampian’s Evaluation of Mia in an Innovative National breast screening Initiative) project is an innovative project to understand the impact of introducing AI into the breast screening programme at NHS Grampian. Funded by the Department of Health and Social Care under its AI in Health and Care Award, and with about 7000 women expected to be involved, this important project will help us understand the best ways to detect breast cancer and implement AI into breast screening.

Who is working on the GEMINI study?

We’re excited to be working with such innovative and collaborative organisations on this research project. NHS Grampian will be hosting the evaluation and local women invited to take part. The AI software, known as ‘Mia’, has been developed by Kheiron Medical Technologies. The University of Aberdeen will be independently evaluating the project and its outcomes. NHS England, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC) are providing funding for the study.
