Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is an important part of treatment for most people with Rheumatological conditions.  The aim of physiotherapy is to help reduce pain, prevent loss of joint function and to improve muscle strength and endurance.  This will maintain or improve overall physical function and independence.

Physiotherapists work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to make sure your condition is managed as well as possible.

Rheumatological physiotherapists are trained in diagnosing and treating patients with Rheumatological conditions.  Their assessment will involve a series of questions followed by an examination to allow them to diagnose what your problem is and to tailor treatment specific to your needs.  Treatments may include:

  • Education
  • Advice
  • Pain management
  • Exercise prescription
  • Manual therapy
  • Provision of walking aids

Further information on physiotherapy is available at the Versus Arthritis website.

How can I access Physiotherapy Services

If you need a physiotherapist who specialises in Rheumatological conditions your Consultant, Specialist Nurse or GP can refer you.

If you have a musculoskeletal problem that is unrelated to your Rheumatological condition your GP can refer you to your local physiotherapy department, or you can self-refer at the NHS Grampian Musculoskeletal Outpatient Physiotherapy website (there is important information on this website you should read first before completing and submitting the self-referral form).

The following QR code will take you direct to the self-referral form (in Microsoft Word format):
