Breastfeeding Peer Supporters

Become a Breastfeeding Peer Support Volunteer with NHS Grampian

What's involved?

Breastfeeding Peer Supporters are parents who have experience of breastfeeding / breastmilk feeding and have undertaken a training programme to provide competent, social and emotional support to breastfeeding families on a voluntary basis.

In NHS Grampian, the initial training is 24 hours with ongoing training and mentorship.

What does the training cover?

  • Communication skills
  • Physiology and anatomy
  • Positioning and attachment
  • Expressing
  • Signposting and breastfeeding challenges
  • Breastfeeding out and about
  • Normal baby behaviour
  • Breastfeeding and complementary solids
  • Sleep
  • Breastfeeding and returning to work
  • Stopping breastfeeding

To find out more about becoming a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter, please contact gram.breastfeedingsupport@nhs.scot.  We are looking for volunteers who can commit to their local breastfeeding group or supporting in the wards at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital.
