Pain Management

After surgery it is normal to feel some pain or discomfort. Whilst we cannot remove all the pain you have completely, we can help to reduce it. Part of your recovery may include you seeing a specialist pain nurse.

The type and amount of pain relief medication you will be prescribed after the operation will depend on the operation you are having and your pain level after the operation.

It is important to take regular pain relief as this will ensure you are able to move, take deep breaths and to return to day-to-day activities such as getting in and out of bed, washing and dressing using pain relief medication to help you if required.

Following more complex surgery or if your pain is difficult to control, you may be seen by the Pain Management Service. This service has Special Pain Management Anaesthetists and Specialist Pain Management Nurses. They will assess your symptoms and discuss with you the treatment plans and interventions which could help reduce your pain.
