F.A.Q.

Do I have to be religious before a hospital chaplain will come and visit?

No. Hospital Chaplains are happy to visit people from any church backgrounds or none. Ask ward staff to contact the chaplain.

Can I use the hospital chapels at any time?

The Hospital Chapels at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital and Roxburghe House are open 24 hours a day as places for quiet prayer and mediation.

The Chapel/Quiet Room at Woodend Hospital is open from 9.00am - 5.00pm.

The Chapel at Royal Cornhill Hospital is open from 9.30am - 4.30pm, Monday - Friday

Are there services of worship held in hospital?

Services are held in most of the hospitals in NHS Grampian. The ward will be able to tell you the local arrangements. Details of the times and places of services in the Aberdeen Hospital can be found on the Worship page.

All are welcome to attend, in some hospitals escort will visit the wards to bring patients to the service, many patients come to the services in night clothes. There are no offerings taken at any of these services.

Can my minister, priest or religious adviser be told that I am in hospital?

Providing that you have given permission for this to happen, ask the ward staff to contact the chaplain who will be glad to do this.

I do not want my minister, priest or religious adviser to know that I am in hospital

We will only pass on information to churches and faith groups when patients have specifically asked us to do so. However it is possible that your minister, priest or religious adviser may hear from friends and neighbours that you are in hospital.

Do hospital chaplains only work 9 am- 5 pm

In the large Aberdeen Hospitals the chaplains share an on-call rota so that there is always a chaplain available to see patients, relatives, visitors and staff at any time of the day or night. The part time chaplains in the smaller hospitals in Aberdeenshire and Moray can be contacted at any time by the ward staff.

How do I contact a hospital chaplain?

The easiest way is to ask ward staff to do this for you. You may also contact the Chaplains Office at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (Monday - Friday 9am - 4.30pm) Telephone 01224 553316 for assistance. At other times contact the main switchboard on 0345 456 6000.
