What is Realistic Medicine?
One of the aims of Realistic Medicine is giving people information about their healthcare and treatment, to encourage them to ask more questions, so that they can make informed decisions about what's best for them.
How will I benefit from this?
As a patient you will better understand your healthcare and treatment, and feel more able to influence the decisions around this.
As Staff you will have the opportunity to take part in compassionate encounters with those in your care. An important part of the Realistic Medicine approach in NHS Grampian is that we will support you to put these core values into practice.
Working in this way, will not only make a difference to patients but will increase job satisfaction for those caring for them.
We choose to work in healthcare because we care and we want to make a difference to those we care for.
NES Realistic Medicine
NHS Education for Scotland and Scottish Government have developed short animations to introduce the 6 Pillars of Realistic Medicine.

Professor Sir Gregor Smith launched his second annual report: “Realistic medicine: a fair and sustainable future” as CMO at the NHS Scotland Event, in Aberdeen in June 2022.
